Duke Energy unit expands its Colorado solar footprint

Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions said it acquired Pike Solar, a solar power plant being built to serve customers of Colorado Springs Utilities. DESS is an unregulated commercial brand of Charlotte-based Duke Energy.

DESS acquired the solar project from Germany-based JUWI Inc. JUWI will be responsible for the project’s engineering, procurement and construction. Solar modules will be procured by DESS.

JUWI and DESS will each have operation and maintenance responsibilities. With this addition, DESS has three solar projects in Colorado totaling 248 MW.

Pike Solar is intended to provide 175 MW of capacity to Colorado Springs Utilities under a 17-year agreement.

The solar plant is under construction with recent activities focused on civil work and racking installation. The array is slated to enter service in late 2023.

Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions provides wind, solar, backup power and managed energy services to some 1,000 projects across the U.S., with a total electric capacity of more than 5,100 MW of unregulated renewable energy.
