L&T Partners with McPhy to Produce Green Hydrogen Electrolyzers in India

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has signed a binding agreement with McPhy Energy, a French electrolyzer technology and manufacturing company, for a long-term partnership to explore opportunities in the emerging green hydrogen market.

As part of the partnership, McPhy will provide L&T with an exclusive license to use its pressurized alkaline electrolyzer technology for manufacturing electrolyzers, including any future product upgrades.

L&T intends to establish a gigawatt-scale manufacturing facility for electrolyzers in India based on McPhy’s technology to meet domestic demand and serve other selected regions.

The company said the proposed agreement aligns with L&T’s strategic goal to have a presence throughout the green energy value chain while simultaneously supporting McPhy’s objective to expand beyond the European market.

Last year, L&T announced the commissioning of a green hydrogen facility at its AM Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in Hazira, Gujarat, to produce 45 kg of green hydrogen daily for captive consumption at its Hazira manufacturing complex.

“The energy industry is undergoing a tectonic shift with green hydrogen emerging as a key fuel in the future energy basket. We are delighted to have signed this agreement with McPhy, which will be a win-win partnership given L&T’s strong presence across the entire value chain of manufacturing, EPC, and services in the energy sector, and McPhy’s technology and research leadership in this sector,” said Subramanian Sarma, Whole Time Director (Energy) at L&T.

“McPhy wants to be a global leader in the manufacture of electrolyzers. Joining forces with a major partner like Larsen & Toubro to address new markets is a great opportunity for McPhy and evidence of the attractiveness of its technology,” said Jean-Baptiste, CEO of McPhy.

Earlier this year, L&T signed a memorandum of understanding with the Norway-based H2Carrier to develop floating green ammonia projects for industrial-scale applications.

India has ambitious plans to become one of the world’s biggest green hydrogen hubs and intends to use it across various sectors. To achieve this, the Union Cabinet approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission to facilitate demand creation, production, utilization, and export of green hydrogen with an initial outlay of ₹197.44 billion (~$2.3 billion).
